Overcoming barriers of isolation in Lesotho’s mountains

“I have never heard of Jesus,” said a young shepherd in the mountains of Lesotho, in southern Africa. This young man is not an unusual case. True isolation means many people who live in remote mountain villages here have yet to learn about the Savior of the world.

But MAF has been working to change that. For the past two years, MAF has been providing flights, equipment, food, and strategic vision for a group of volunteer pastors—the Lesotho Flying Pastors—to visit the Tlhanyaku region one week each month. A second area, Matsaile, was added last year as well. With the exception of two months earlier in the year, during the COVID lockdown, the pastors have spent two weeks out of each month based in one of these locations—where they hike one-to-three hours a day to reach people living further out in the mountains.

Though this young man lives with his flocks far from his village and comes home only every few months, in June he was met by the Flying Pastors. They shared with him, as they have with hundreds of others in the area, the hope and peace that can be found in Jesus Christ. Their meeting ended with the shepherd allowing them to pray with him.

In July MAF sent a full-time pastor, Setlokane, and his wife, Mahlompho, to live in Tlhanyaku. Their constant presence and ministry in the area has jump-started five weekly Bible studies in distant villages scattered throughout the Senqu River valley. Pastor Setlokoane reported that he recently contacted the shepherd again to continue the conversation. Praise God that this boy’s isolation has been overcome and pray for God to do a supernatural work in his heart, leading to salvation.
